As my relationship with beer continues into the 13th year, I have to admit I am having an affair with another. The mistress is cheese. But it’s not what you think. Beer and I have an open relationship. In fact, cheese kind of spices up the love we have for one another. This weekend we all got together at the Artisan Cheese Festival. This weekend a tradition in the East Bay took place that I was lucky enough to attend for the first time. On a rainy afternoon I headed to downtown Oakland where Pacific Coast Brewing Company hosted their 21st Annual “A Tasting of Holiday Beers.” You never know what will be poured as part of the event, and not all will necessarily be holiday beers, but you are certain to get a wide variety of excellent beers to sample at a leisurely place. I started my foray into grilled cheese experimentation last week with 2 pairings for these melty sandwiches. This time I’m giving some love over to my examiner column and saving one here for my faithful readers. Continue reading More Grilled Cheese Goodness

One of my favorite beer and food pairings out there is beer and cheese. I don’t know a lot about cheese so I spend a lot of time talking to the person at the cheese counter, but I have begun to figure some of this out for myself. Recently, I discovered an article on a trend in making grilled cheese sandwiches with fine cheeses. This gave me an idea, make grilled cheese with my favorite cheeses and pair them with a beer. Summer is winding down now and with Labor Day weekend set to kick off, what better time to crack a beer and think back to the beers we drank over the past few months. While finding some of our favorite summer beers may be difficult as a slew of fall seasonals are taking over shelf space, I thought sharing my favorite summer beer story from the last few months would be the best way to go. Thanks to Better Beer Blog for hosting this month’s Session: Summer Beers. Continue reading Session #31: Summer Beers

This past Saturday was a big day for beer festivals. While it would have been easy for me to stay in Monterey and hit up the festival hosted this year by Chris Nelson, aka the Beer Geek, I wanted to be at home for Beerfest here in Santa Rosa. Continue reading Face to Face Beerfest 2009: Recap

After the medal winners were announced at the Great American Beer Festival last month I checked the list for local brews that I haven’t tried, or may not have tried for some time. One that caught my attention was the Blarney Sisters Dry Irish Stout at Third Street Aleworks here in Santa Rosa. With Russian River, Flavor and The Sweet Spot all within a few blocks, it’s easy to miss Aleworks, so I set out for a quick afternoon sampling of their award winning brew.
