Beer of the Week: Golden Road Brewing Wolf Among Weeds IPA

Healthy (sort of) again and anxious to get back at it, I decided to reach for another beer I brought back from the southern half of the state while on vacation. While the beer is slowly moving north I am anxious to see more of this brewery which features a lot of former Bay Area people. The Beer of the Week is Golden Road Brewing Wolf Among Weeds IPA.

This beer is a balanced showcase of the majestic hop specie, in Latin, Humulus Lupulus, which translates “Wolf Among Weeds”. It’s our celebration of California’s enthusiasm for hop-forward IPAs. At 8%, Wolf Will Sneak up on you from behind the robust citrus and dank earthy hop notes mirrored in its aroma and flavor profile.

Wolf Among Weeds IPA reminds me of a pineapple. From the hazy golden colors, reminiscent of pineapple juice with a white frothy head, to the aroma of the sharp tropical fruit that come bursting through the hops, pineapple is the driving force of this beer. The hops lightly sting the tongue on your first sip but give way to big tropical fruit flavors with only a hint of resinous pine in the finish. The mouthfeel is what you might expect from an 8% beer but this IPA goes down smooth. With a little warmth, the alcohol forces it’s way out front, but not so much as to tame the rest of the beer’s bright flavors.

Wolf Among Weeds is a beer that fans of Golden Road from their inception might find surprising, but not so much to those who have followed the individuals involved with the brewery. Headbrewer Brewmaster Jesse Houck is leading the way for the Glendale Los Angeles brewery and brings with him a string of success from his days brewing in the Bay Area. Houck has excelled in brewing high-impact IPAs while minimizing the bitter qualities of the hop. Tropical flavors have become a bit of a hall mark, especially the bright, acidic flavor of the pineapple.

With Houck as part of their team, Golden Road contirnues to push forward in the Southern California market. In my brief visit to their pub, I was impressed by the variety of styles including a selection of IPA to appease the hop-head crowd. Wolf Among Weeds IPA is available year round and will be a great way to get to know this brewery if you haven’t already.
