Beer of the Week: Brasserie Dupont Avec les Bons Voeux

I usually try to not feature a brewery more than once within a one month period, but Brasserie Dupont has forced my hand. Posca Rustica was perfect for Thanksgiving and this next one I can’t imagine not having at least once before Christmas. We’re kicking off the Holiday beers with a classic. The Beer of the Week is Brasserie Dupont’s Avec les Bons Voeux.

“Les Bons Voeux” means best wishes, which is what Brasserie Dupont sends with this very special saison ale brewed only for the holidays. Redolently aromatic, rich and velvety, this is an ale to toast the season and welcome in the New Year!

Les Bons Voeux is a joy even before you start to drink it. Open this beer carefully as even a fresh bottle with greet you with a loud “Pop!” What follows is an energetic head, so pour slowly. If you find the beer to have too much head, drizzle the beer into the glass and watch how high the rocky white head climbs from the glass. My personal record is about an inch and a half, but I dare not tread further.

Once in the glass Avec les Bons Voeux is a murky straw gold with the aforementioned rocky white head. The foam starts as tight lively bubbles and consolidates into large pockets of aroma, collapsing under the weight of those above it. From this deflating head arises an aroma of yeast and spice, all familiar to those who love the line of Dupont beers. Les Bon Voeux continues to show familial character with a tough of honey sweetness followed by grassy hops and an abundance of yeasty phenols.

Spicy and rich in texture, this is a celebratory saison through and through. Be careful as this beer will remind you of the session-strength cousins but carries a 9.5% punch that will liven up any holiday feast or party.
