For the uninitiated, The Session is a unified blogging event where one writer picks a topic and everyone follows and writes about that topic. this event happens on the first Friday of every month. For some reason I haven’t participated as much as I have in the past, but hosting the first Session of 2012, maybe I can make my participation a resolution for the coming year. With that out of the way, let’s get to the topic for next month.
With the New Year looming and a month of Christmas and Holiday parties to enjoy there are plenty of opportunities to get into a different beverage besides beer, alcoholic or otherwise. It was with this in mind that I was reminded of a conversation I had one day with Jay Brooks. Looking for advice on how to squeeze some blood from this stone of beer blogging, Jay told me a lot of writers have to look outside of beer to help make a complete income. Upon bringing this up as a Session topic he even offered up a much better title than I would have thought up.
So as we are all incredibly interesting people, and almost always drink beer, let’s talk about what we drink when not drinking beer. Maybe your passion for coffee rivals that of craft beer, or it could be another alcoholic beverage such as scotch. My daughter being a root beer fan would appreciate her dad reviewing a few fizzy sodas. Maybe you have a drink that takes the edge off the beer, be it hair of the dog or a palate cleanser during the evening.
Beer cocktails, wines, ciders, meads, you name it as long as it’s not beer. Try to tie it in with craft beer in some way for extra credit. Be creative and I’ll see you guys in the new year.

When I get the urge for an alcoholic beverage aside from beer my preference is a gimlet. As there appears to be some disagreement as to what a “gimlet” is, I am referring to “half gin and half Rose’s lime juice and nothing else.” Well, except for a few ice cubes.
When I don’t drink alcohol, the main things I drink are water and coffee.

I don’t participate in this nearly as much as I’d like or should. But the diversion/tangent that you’ve taken here caught my eye and, selfishly, gave me a reason to post something up here without much effort.
I wrote this over a year ago about a wine dinner at the General Sutter Inn in Lititz, Pa. They’re well-known for their recurring Cask Festivals and the adjoining Bulls Head Pub. So attending it and talking with head beer guy there, Paul Pendyck, provided some nice material and our chance to offer our thoughts for substituting beers for wines in each of the courses.
Here’s a link to the article at The Washington Times Communities section.
Thanks for a topic that looks at beer (or not) from a different viewpoint….which, in my opinion, is an extremely healthy thing to do.
