I wrote a few days ago that Hoptown Brewing Company was hanging it up. Since then I wanted to make sure I got a chance to try at least one of their beers before they were off the shelves for good. On a recent expedition to Bottle Barn here in Santa Rosa (fine hunting grounds for sure) I grabbed a bottle f their IPA, because with a name like Hoptwn, you better make a fine IPA.
This IPA pours a nice cloudy orange. There was a little sediment at the bottom of the bottle which I went ahead and dumped into the glass. The first thing I noticed was a bit of a unque aroma. Most west coast IPA have a strong grapefruity-citrus aroma and flavor. This one citrusy to be sure, but was more orange than grapefruit. I really enjoyed this IPA, the falvor wasn’t as intense as the typical IPA that you find today, but was more complex, and easy to drink.
It really is a shame that there won’t be anymore of this beer making it to the stores anymore. I really enjoyed this beer and may try to find more of their ales to sample before it’s too late. Let this serve as a reminder, be adventurous, try new beers, especially local beers. If we don’t, then we’ll see more breweries closing up shop, and none of us want that to happen.
