First the Hops, Now Taxes?!

The hop shortage has caused the prices a good six pack to climb to the $9 region.  But that’s not enough according to one congressman from San Jose.

Jim Beall would like to increase the tax paid on a bottle of beer from 2 cents to 30 cents per bottle.  This tax increase would go towards health services, crime prevention and programs for underage drinking.  By his estimates this would generate upwards of $2 billion per year.  One question, how much money would be generated if he just kissed my ass.

Thankfully, many say this issue won’t get the necessary two-thirds vote required to pass.  Of all people, the Republicans are coming to the rescue.  I never thought I would say it, but thank God for the Republicans.  I think I just died a little.

Either way, read the whole story here.  And if this gets any further, make sure to visit the Beer Activists here, because this will not stand.  As I mentioned previously, California is home to 11 of the top 50 craft breweries in the country and a bill like this would do nothing short of destroying the industry.
