Session #59 Roundup

January was my months to host The Session, a unified blogging experience shared by beer writers around the globe. With 58 sessions behind us, it becomes more and more difficult to find a new topic; one that’s interesting to beer writers and compelling to beer readers. So I chose the topic of “I Almost Always Drink Beer, But When I Don’t” hoping it would stir up some new ideas for a New Year.  Continue reading Session #59 Roundup

Session #59: I Almost Always Drink Beer, But When I Don’t…

I almost always drink craft beer, but when I don’t, and I’m still looking for the intoxicating effects of an adult beverage, I usually like scotch, bourbon, or other brown liquors. Thankfully, the craft beer industry has been involved in a recent trend of small batch distilling. Anchor Brewing of San Francisco was the first to venture into this business that I had heard of but have since seen other brewers take the step as well. On this January afternoon, I decided to pay a visit to Stillwater Spirits in Petaluma.  Continue reading Session #59: I Almost Always Drink Beer, But When I Don’t…

Announcing The Session #59: I Almost Always Drink Beer, But When I Don’t…

For the uninitiated, The Session is a unified blogging event where one writer picks a topic and everyone follows and writes about that topic. this event happens on the first Friday of every month. For some reason I haven’t participated as much as I have in the past, but hosting the first Session of 2012, maybe I can make my participation a resolution for the coming year. With that out of the way, let’s get to the topic for next month.  Continue reading Announcing The Session #59: I Almost Always Drink Beer, But When I Don’t…

The Session #51: The Great Online Beer & Cheese-Off

The Session runs every first Friday of the month. It’s not like someone picks a different date for it each month. Yet, for some reason, it seems to surprise me when it happens. Even when I’m planning for it, I miss it. I’ve become one of the people I make fun of, the people who are scrambling on Christmas eve as if December 25th was news to them. That said, this Session was one I really wanted to participate in as the topic was beer and cheese. Host Jay Brooks gave us three cheeses and challenged us to find what, in our opinion, the best pairing would be.  Continue reading The Session #51: The Great Online Beer & Cheese-Off

The Session #49: Regular Beer

It’s been a while since I participated in The Session. It’s not that I don’t want to participate, it’s just that I usually forget. This month’s topic is “Regular Beer.” Stan at Appellation Beer defines regular beer in many ways, but I’m finding that I don’t know if I understand regular beer.  Continue reading The Session #49: Regular Beer

The Session: A Surprise from North Carolina

It’s the first Friday of the month and I have a confession to make. I’ve been a bit lazy when it comes to The Session and I apologize. There have been some interesting topics and I wanted to contribute, but alas, the laziness won out. This month, that’s not the case. So with a topic of “An Unexpected Discovery: Finding Great Beer in the Last Place You’d Look” hosted by Mike Lynch at Burgers and Brews I jump back into the Session with an unexpected find during a business trip. Continue reading The Session: A Surprise from North Carolina

The Session #40: Session Beer

The Session is back for another edition. This time, it’s hosted by Erik over at Top Fermented and he has chosen the topic of Session beers. Now, most people will be talking about sub-5% beers, English milds and that sort of thing. Not me. I’m going to go the other way and talk about what some consider the death of the session beer. I have a style of beer I call the California Session, and it’s definitely not a low alcohol beer. Continue reading The Session #40: Session Beer

Hop Press: The Session #39 Roundup

It was a wild week for me, so I apologize for the delay in rounding up The Session posts. Basically, between hosting The Session, planning a campsite at Boonville Beer Festival, and finding out that my wife and I will be having another baby, it’s been a busy weekend. This month, the topic was collaborations, so let’s see what everyone got together to do. Continue reading Hop Press: The Session #39 Roundup

Don’t forget: The Session #39 is next Friday

I posted this hastily, knowing the 1st was coming up. The Session is NEXT Friday, May 7th, not this Friday, which would still be in April.

It’s my turn to host The Session, and I’m doing just that over on The Hop Press. Continue reading Don’t forget: The Session #39 is next Friday

The Session #38 – Cult Beers

Anyone planning on lining up for the iPad? If you’re answering yes, you’re probably sitting in front of a Mac Store right now, reading this on some portable internet device, shunning responsibility for a few days to be the first in line to get a taste of your beloved electronic goodness. I’d imagine following Brewed For thought will be fantastic once the iPad is available. But what if they stopped selling the iPad after only a few hours. What if you had to be in line, brave the elements and not know if you would actually get to ever hold that wonderful iPad in your hand? What if that iPad were a beer? Well, there are quite a few of these iPad beers, and people do wait in line for them. That’s the topic of this month’s Session: Cult Beers. Continue reading The Session #38 – Cult Beers
